Watermark Publishing Group

  • Internship description: Interns will assist in creating a bi-weekly news publication focused on the LGBTQ community in Central Florida and assist in creating daily content for our website and social media. Interns will research, pitch and write a variety of stories including but not limited to breaking news, politics, lifestyle pieces, A&E interviews, feature writing, previews and reviews. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend and cover community events, as well as take photos and shoot video.
  • Qualifications: Strong written and communication skills. Knowledge of the AP Stylebook. Self motivated and able to multitask. Able to work within and meet tight deadlines. Comfortable working in WordPress, Microsoft Office, inCopy and various social media platforms.
  • How many hours per week: We are very flexible with the amount of hours, letting the intern make their schedule as long as it complies with the hour requirements for internships with UCF. Office hours here are M-F, 9a.m.-5p.m., so intern office hours must be within those parameters.

  • Additional Information: I think there is valuable information to learn in all the internships offered, but with Watermark being a small, independently-owned publication, we are able to offer more variety in what interns can do. Instead of just writing stories or just covering events or just editing and laying out an issue, our interns get to do all of it. They walk through the entire process of each issue along we the editorial team, learning every step. And while we are a niche publication, the LGBTQ community is also so wide and varied that interns will have the opportunity to write any type of story because LGBTQ people are in every aspect of the world. We do offer a small stipend at the end of the semester for interns based on the number of hours they work and can be anywhere from $200-300.

  • Additional Information: This is an unpaid internship. Interns will learn radio reporting and writing, online reporting skills, and how to research and produce interviews for air. Interns can also develop their skills in social media production and other media such as Facebook Live. An interest and skills in photography is a bonus.

  • Internship description: Our ambitious editorial interns work closely with our creative and dynamic full-time editorial team. Interns become an integral part of the YourTango team, learning the ins and outs of the online publishing business, working one-on-one with editors to pitch ideas and writing quality articles for publication. Responsibilities: Pitching headline and article ideas daily. Writing/editing a minimum of 8 articles per week. Periodically editing article submissions from other writers. Building articles within our content management system (we provide full training) Finding images, memes for header photos, and in-body content. Using current Search engine optimization (SEO) techniques on every article (we provide training). Periodically working with editorial content from our partner sites, assisting editors with various projects, training in areas to expand skillset, etc.
  • Internship Qualifications: Our ideal candidate is someone with: Excellent writing skills with the capability to produce fast, super-clean copy for publication. The ability (and drive!) to write a minimum of 8 articles per week (within their 22-hour schedule). Excellent spelling, grammar, and typing skills with a passion for writing clean, error-free content. A degree (or currently pursuing a degree) in journalism, magazine journalism, marketing, communication, English, writing, marketing, advertising, or related field. Stellar interpersonal and communication skills, with a fast-paced, high-energy, can-do mentality. The ability to juggle several tasks at once in a fast-paced online environment. Self-driven and undeniably reliable.

  • Additional Information: Interns are paid a $500 stipend upon completion of 16 weeks. This is a writing-focused internship, so be prepared to pitch article ideas and write up to 8-10 articles per week as assigned by your supervising editor. Great real-world experience writing for a publication. Lots of portfolio content. We also train on SEO (search engine optimization) standards and include interns in team editorial meetings.
